STINGLESS BEE

Updated: Jul 7, 2020

Project Title: Intensify Harvesting Efficiency of Stingless Bee Honey for Micro Entrepreneur

Brief:

Particularly in Malaysia, stingless bees meliponiculture still growing but already lively because the demand very high which caused the price of stingless bee’s honey skyrocketing because of the lack of supplies do not meet the customer demand. Melipoliculture done nowadays is using a wooden log (stingless beehive) which has been cut and placed a box with a lid and the honey bees are taken at the box. However, there is still no thorough studies about the beehive to make the harvesting process becomes easier as well as increasing the honey volume. Meliponiculture is all about emphasizing the quality of honey production. Therefore, the beekeeper will try their best to maximize honey production from their colony. Honey takes a really long time to harvest from 1 month up to 3 months depends on the weather and the season. When it comes to fruit season, the honey produced will become high quantity. some of the hive may produce a low quantity and may need up to 3 beehives to collect around 1 kilogram.

Key Issues: Meliponiculture, Intensify Economy trough Design, Sustainable Design

Impact:

This research is to design a beehive that will ease the harvesting process and increase the output quantity. The current meliponiculture that depends on natural hive is not suitable for a large scale meliponiculture as its lack in production and hard to harvest. Besides that, this research also can shorten the frequency gap of harvesting the honey. The time gap between each harvest for one hive is quite long and this is wasting time. As we know, in mass production, quantity need to tally with the demand from the customer in order to fulfill the customer needs. With shorten harvest time, the beekeeper can increase their income.
